The Ancestry of the inhabitants of MAZEWORLD is determined by a family's blood affiliation with any of the some 60 legendary settlers of the world. Affiliation is usually automatically passed down from generation to generation, the dominant line depending on local traditions (patriarchal/matriarchal). Being of one or other ancestry is supposed to carry certain talents or attributes said to have been possessed by the ancestor. These traits seem to vary from place to place, along with spellings, and opinion on whether a certain name is good or bad. Researchers have only begun to chart the names and their supposed attributes.
The following is a brief list of the most common ancient progenitors, both male and female. It should be noted that spellings are known to change from land to land. As the distinct honor of ancestry grows in popularity, more names are being added to the list.
- "Son/Daughter of"
Most ancestor-affiliated people of MAZEWORLD use a preposition in the local dialect meaning 'son of' or 'daughter of.' These middle segments of a proper name are listed below by geographic use:
Land / son of / daughter of
Calardun / mak / nia
Svedda / arne / star
Sylvega / tec / sha /
Kelitrops / di / mer
Threll / ben / ama
- Unaffiliated Persons
Many people, for one reason or other, never received an ancestral affiliation. These less fortunate people are dealt with carefully by the affiliated, for a lack of clear ancestry seems to have a aura of dishonesty or bad blood about it. In more rural places, these people are seen as second-class citizens. However, anyone can discover a lost affiliation by seeking the auspices of a blood oracle. However, these rituals can be costly and/or sacrificial. Customs vary from place to place, and often require long-term efforts (Quests).
